Plumbing Emergency
What to do while you wait
🚰
Burst or leaking pipe
- Turn off your main water stopcock immediately. It is usually under the kitchen sink or where the supply pipe enters your home.
- Turn on all cold taps to drain the system and reduce pressure.
- If water is near electrics, switch off at the fuse box.
- Use towels or buckets to contain any water and reduce damage.
🚽
Blocked or overflowing toilet
- Stop flushing immediately.
- Turn off the water supply to the toilet using the isolation valve behind or below it.
- If water is overflowing, use towels to contain it and protect flooring.
- Do not use chemicals in a blocked toilet.
💧
Water coming through ceiling
- Turn off the water supply at the main stopcock.
- Place buckets or towels under the affected area.
- If you can safely do so, make a small hole in the ceiling to allow water to drain in a controlled way rather than pooling and causing more damage.
- Switch off electricity in the affected area if there is any risk of contact with water.
🧊
Frozen pipes
- Turn off the water at the main stopcock in case the pipe has cracked.
- Never use a blowtorch or open flame to thaw pipes.
- A hairdryer on a low setting can be used gently on visible frozen sections.
- Open the nearest tap slightly so water can flow as the ice melts.
- Check for any cracks or splits once thawed before turning the supply back on.
Heating Emergency
What to do while you wait
🔥
Boiler failure or no heating
- Check your thermostat is set correctly and that the timer is active.
- Check your boiler pressure gauge. If it reads below 1 bar, low pressure may be the cause.
- Check your fuse box to make sure the boiler circuit has not tripped.
- If the boiler is showing an error code, note it down before calling us.
- Do not attempt to open the boiler casing or carry out repairs yourself.
💨
Suspected gas leak
- Do not turn any electrical switches on or off.
- Do not use any naked flames or smoke.
- Open all windows and doors immediately.
- Turn off the gas at the meter if you know where it is and it is safe to do so.
- Leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. This is a 24-hour free service.
- Only return when the property has been declared safe.
🌡️
Leaking radiator or pipework
- Place towels or a container under the leak to catch water.
- Turn the thermostatic valve on the radiator fully clockwise to reduce flow.
- If the leak is significant, turn off your boiler and allow the system to cool.
- Turn off the filling loop if your system is continuing to pressurise.
- Do not attempt to tighten fittings on a pressurised system.
⚠️
Carbon monoxide alarm
- Leave the property immediately with all occupants including pets.
- Do not re-enter for any reason.
- Call 999 if anyone is feeling unwell.
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
- Do not use the boiler or any gas appliances until the property has been inspected by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
