We’ve been friends since school. Between us, three children, two very understanding wives, and a shared conviction that Norfolk deserves better than it often gets from the trades.
Alex built his career delivering technology and change for some of the UK’s largest businesses, including one of the UK’s largest premium retailers, a business built on the belief that doing things properly and treating people well isn’t a cost, it’s the point. Ted spent his in motorsport, aviation and electric vehicle engineering, in industries where precision isn’t a virtue, it’s just the baseline.
We came from different worlds professionally, but we’d both absorbed the same thing somewhere along the way:
“The standard you set is a choice. And most businesses set it too low.”
We started Coast & Country because we were fed up of hearing the same stories, and because we both wanted to build something that was genuinely ours. The engineer who quoted one thing and charged another. The calls that went unanswered. The customer who let someone into their home and felt like they’d made a mistake.
“Those things are a choice, not a skill.”
Those stories are so common they’ve become normal. We don’t think they should be.
This is home for both of us. Not just where we work, where we grew up, where our families are, where we walk the coast and the countryside at weekends. When we work on someone’s home here, it matters to us personally.
Coast & Country is what we’re building together. Transparent pricing, genuine communication, work done to a standard we’re both proud of. We just want to be the kind of business that people in Norfolk are glad exists.
We didn’t start Coast & Country to be another local plumber. We started it because the experience of finding and hiring a tradesperson in this country is, frankly, broken - and we wanted to fix it.
How many times have you called a tradesperson, asked for a price, and been told “I’ll let you know when I get there”? You let them in, they spend an hour, and then hand you a bill that bears no resemblance to what you expected. We list our prices publicly. Every one of them. You know what you’re paying before we ever arrive.
Three missed calls. A text that goes unanswered for two days. A booking that gets cancelled the morning of. We’ve all been there. At Coast & Country, we operate a WhatsApp-first approach because that’s how people actually communicate today. You message us, we reply - usually within the hour. Simple.
In virtually every other part of your life you can book what you need online, instantly, with a confirmation straight to your phone. Why should a boiler service be any different? Our online booking takes two minutes. You pick the service, give us the details, and we confirm the same day. No phone tag. No waiting.
Those backgrounds didn’t just give us qualifications to hang on a wall. They shaped how we built this business from the ground up. Every system, every process, every interaction has been designed with the same question: what would we want if we were the customer?
Booking is genuinely easy because we built the systems to remove friction. Pricing is genuinely transparent because we believe hiding it is a choice, not a necessity. Communication is fast because the operation was designed around it. And the engineering work is held to a standard where “good enough” doesn’t exist.
The difference isn’t just in the technical work. It’s in the entire experience, from the moment you search for a plumber to the moment we leave your home. That’s what we set out to build, and it’s what we hold ourselves to every single day.
These aren’t words on a wall. They’re the reason we exist.
